The “story sagas” for racial and diversity healing, are presented, through the lens of enslaved men, women and those who held them in bondage, woven together by Negro Spirituals, with audience participation”. They were created by Ayo Handy-Kendi, internationally renowned as the Breath Sekou and founder of Black Love Day, Feb. 13th, As a Storyteller/Re-enactor, her. performances have delighted and uplifted countless lives for over 30 years.
Added this year to the “saga” performances, the audience is asked to explore their feelings in a compassionate technique, Handy-Kendi calls “silencing”. Silencing is a contemplative, inner-dialogue in which you meditate briefly on your feelings, honor them by writing them down and on a sub-conscious cellular level, breathe through them for deep release and effective reconciliation of inter-generational and present-day emotional trauma.
After the healing session, the finale encourages a talk-back dialogue about the historical emancipation, portrayals that speaks to current emancipation issues like D.C. Statehood, racism, the prison industrial system impact on men and the effects of enslavement with continued need for “Black Love” as self-care.

Black Marriage Day 2024: Marriage Changes Things”
The eighteenth Annual Black Marriage Day celebration, Sunday, March 24, 2024, with the theme “Marriage Changes Things” will be held in Baltimore, Maryland. Eliza Cooper, director of Thriving Community Collaborative and Ayo Handy-Kendi, founder of African American Holiday Association (AAHA) and the 31st Black Love Day (BLD) are collaborating with Dr Nisa Muhammad, originator of Black Marriage Day and founder Wedded Bliss Foundation, Inc., will host, a free Black Marriage Day program at House of Chiefs, 4603 York Road, Baltimore, Maryland, 21212, owned by Eartha Harris, host of “Tight Knit Family Radio Show, WEAA, FM. To attend please register at: HTTPS://BUYTICKETS.AT/THRIVINGCOMMUNITIESCOLLABORATIVE/1184028
Envisioned by Cooper, a community activist/scholar and workshop leader, this program is the 2nd Black Marriage day event she has hosted in Baltimore, joining activists in hundreds of cities nationwide to highlight the benefits of married life and offer celebrations to strengthen and promote marriage in the D.M.V. Black community. She has organized a panel of marriage and relationship experts, musicians, and couples who have been married for 10- 40+ years.
Another feature, is a presentation by Sekou Mama Ayo Handy-Kendi, fhe founder of Black Love Day, who was recently the subject of a New York Times article and in a production, “Let Love”, by the Taraji P. Henson Foundation, As a certified breathologist she has breathed with millions to encourage Black joy and self-care on radio, t.v. and in print, notably featured on Steve Harvey’s Morning Show, Roland Martin’s News Hour, CNN, and The Washington Post .
Black Marriage Day has been celebrated annually at locally sponsored events hosted by faith-based and community groups annually on the fourth Sunday of March since 2003. Dr. Muhammad said marriage activists in more than 300 cities participated in 2022. Wedded Bliss Foundation and Black Marriage Day activities have been featured nationally in the Washington Post, Black Enterprise, and Essence magazines, on CNN, and more.
"Marriage has always mattered to the Black community, and this celebration lets the world know. We're creating a cultural shift in the Black community to reconsider the benefits of marriage and to show the many couples who understand, “Marriage Changes Things”, Wedded Bliss Foundation Executive Director Dr. Nisa Muhammad said. “Much of what we hear about marriage in the Black community is a blues song about low rates, out-of-wedlock births, escalating divorces, and how somebody did somebody wrong. We are replacing that blues song with a love song of joy because “Marriage Changes Things.”
Cooper in describing the goals of the Baltimore program stated, “ the one thing about marriage, is that we go through many seasons. No matter if we are married with children, recently divorced, blended families, or even grandchildren --all things related to marriage and how it changes things--will be discussed. Commitment, communication and friendship help us weather, our marriage, whatever, comes our way. This is what our program will emphasize with many resources available to assist married couples, those thinking of getting married and staying married” Let's show the world Marriage Changes Things. #BMD2024
