how to observe black love day (BLD)

Demonstrate the 5 Tenants of Black Love wherever you are, because it is not where you go on Black Love Day, February 13th, it is what you do to act in love for 24 hours and beyond.
Remember, EVERY DAY CAN BE BLACK LOVE DAY , if we choose.

What is Black Love Day – Feb. 13th?
Picture

Black Love Day (BLD) is the 5th nationally-commemorated African American Holiday ('wholyday') observance of atonement, reconciliation, celebration, and 24-hour demonstration of Black Love through 5 tenets (Loving Acts): Love for The Creator, Love for Self, Love for the Black Family, Love for the Black Community, and Love for the Black Diaspora. BLD also encourages Whites in the 24-hour period to "show love in action" towards Blacks, by working on their own racial attitudes and behaviors.

The goals of this day are to increase peace, stop violence, end Black self-hatred, and white supremacy/racism, and to offer a spiritual, African-centered alternative to the commercialized, and sometimes violent, Valentine's Day.

Since 1993, the first BLD, Founder Ayo Handy-Kendi has shared the BLD tenets and their higher love vibrations with millions on radio, TV, in print, on college campuses, with community organizations, and through her “Black Love Book”, which can be ordered through www.AfricanAmericanHolidays.org OR purchased at selected bookstores.

Furthermore, Handy-Kendi is the founder of the Ritual of Reconciliation, the foundation ritual of Black Love Day and a ritual of re-connection and restorative justice practice, exceptional to use anytime.

Handy-Kendi co-created AAHA healing services through PositivEnergyWorks, as the  Founder and as a Certified Breathologist of her Optimum Life Breathology (OLB) system.

In this work, she connects the dots between culture and healing, especially for People of African Descent or People of Color and advocates breath techniques as a daily and simple tool for healing the Spirit, Mind and Body.

She has over 50 years of experience in transformative and  breath practices for wholistic healing of cellular memory which enabled her to evolve from her own pain and trauma as a mother of a slain teenager, and addicted behavior and repressed memories of being sexually and verbally abused as a child.

SOME TRADITIONAL THINGS TO DO ON BLACK LOVE DAY:

·** It's NOT WHERE YOU GO for Black Love Day (BLD).. it is WHAT YOU DO to demonstrate (show) love on this day. Demonstrate the 5 Tenets (Acts of Love) on BLD to transform on this 'wholyday', and then practice these tenets every day, to maintain the higher vibration of love!

Events and activities are held in honor of, to celebrate, or to commemorate Black Love Day. For example: Black Love Day is not the Black L.U.V. Festival or the Black Love Relationship Ceremony, both held in D.C., or the many Black Love celebrations, nationwide.

Instead, Black Love Day, Feb. 13th, is commemorated for 24 hours, personally, locally, nationally, and internationally by demonstrating or showing the 5 Tenets (Loving Acts: Love for the Creator, Self, the Black Family, the Black Community and the so-called, Black Diaspora.  On this day, so-called Whites show "love in action" )

These
are the guiding tenets or principles on which to base your demonstration of loving acts.

For example, a Community act of love can be spending money with a Black-owned business or vendor. The Black Love Book has over 100 examples of how to use the 5 Tenets to transform in love on Black Love Day and beyond.

DISPLAY THE AKOMA

*** Display the Akoma, an ancient African Adinkra symbol of love, patience, goodwill, faithfulness, and endurance. This open, heart-shaped symbol was re-named and co-opted as a “Valentine.”;

*** The greeting is Nya Akoma (N yah Ah comah) means get a heart, be patient.
On Feb. 13th, lead from the heart -- be more kind, loving, caring, self-compassionate, tolerant, peaceful, patient, show unconditional love....Feel how wonderful and transformative one day of the highest love vibration can be....then replicate that behavior and feeling from then on.

***Wear the colors Purple and Black – purple for spiritual growth and royalty; black for the color of the people and freedom from evil (Psalms 7 or 12); also black is the blend of all colors;

***Buy BLD conscious-raising gifts from Black merchants, practicing the tenet of love for the so-called Black Race .   Consider buying healing products or food, inspirational, spiritual gifts, or hand-crafted gifts, made from the heart.  Avoid buying and giving the usual Valentine’s trinkets, stuffed animals, jewelry, diamonds, candy, etc.;

***In-gather the people at a Black Love Relationship Ceremony, including in the Ritual of Reconciliation;

***If there is no local community BLD Relationship Ceremony, feel free to start one by contacting us, here at AAHA.

***And, you can create a BLD Relationship Ceremony, right in your own home space. The Black Love Book offers a complete guide in setting up the ceremony, offering all the official practices;

***Need suggestions on “how to demonstrate love?” Read the “Black Love Book”, for over 100 or more "acts of love" that can be demonstrated for so-called Black and White communities!

Habari Gani,  on this day of Ujamaa, as the Director of the African American Holiday Association (AAHA), I have prayed over this decision, and have thought best to POSTPONE THE first UJAMAA Virtual Conference on Using Holidays, Celebrations & Ritual for our Empowerment planned for Monday, December 29, 2025.

The conference is being rescheduled for Sunday, January 18 from 3-6 p.m. EST, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, who believed in self-help and our culture.

 To be authentic, I must take personal responsibility in not adding in the correct links for people to sign up for the conference on the webpages indicated.  And due to our limited outreach to the presenters, we have not heard the responses that we had anticipated for a great presentation.

Here now is the link to sign up by registering for the new date of the conference, and please spread the word.
We must use the resources of our own holidays, celebrations and rituals in 2026 to create our own self-determination, as a people for wealth generation, as well as for healing, a goal, I believe Dr. King would believe in

Please attend:

aND PREPARE FOR BLACK LOVE DAY, FEB. 13TH 5TH VIRTUAL RELATIONSHIP CONFERENCE & RITUAL OF RECONCILIATION

with Deepest Breath in the up-coming NU Year,

Sekou Mama Ayo Handy-Kendi,

GOALS OF THIS CONFERENCE.

You are invited to gather at the 1st UJAMAA VIRTUAL CONFERENCE on "HOW WE MUST CREATE "UJAMAA" WITH OUR HOLIDAYS, CELEBRATIONS & RITUALS".  A gathering of holiday founders, organizers, event producers, creatives, service providers, historians, product developers, and spiritual, cultural leaders, etc., who will discuss the critical importance of and advocate for a collective response to using our holidays, celebrations & rituals for cooperative economic change, self-help and healing, using our own cultural commemorations.

The ultimate goal of the conference is to continue the creation of The Union of African Centered Holidays, Celebrations & Rituals, a private, cooperative membership. and trade union organization, with an administrative board to spear-head direction and galvanize advocacy for it's members for the public good and empowerment.  The conference is the culmination of the 5 year plan envisioned by myself, as the founder director of the African American Holiday Association (AAHA). The new organization will be a sister organization to AAHA, and has collected some members already, I hope that it will be officially launched at this conference with its official name adopted and the membership structure approved.
